The Connect Nigeria's Writers’ Conference 2019 gathered the best of the best in the field of writing in all of Nigeria to share their ideas and tips on how to make money through writing. We are proud to present to everyone our speakers for this year's writers' conference.
Born in Lagos, Dare Olaitan studied in Economics and Business Management in his undergraduate studies in Illinois Wesleyan College. He decided that the biggest area for growth in the African Market was located in Film Production and then took a Film Directing/Screen Writing Degree at the Colorado Film School. He is the Founder and managing director of Singularity Media LTD.
Poet, Motivational Speaker, Film Maker
Chioma Ngaikedi is a multiple award-winning writer and film maker. She is the Chief Executive Officer of Ixora Production Limited, one of Nigeria’s emerging film companies. Chioma is the founder and curator of Chi-family, one of the largest online communities of writers and philanthropists drawing membership from every continent of the world. Over the past three years, Chioma’s brainchild, Chi-family has organized more than 6 Flash Fiction Contests designed to not only challenge and engage writers at all levels, but also to financially reward them. While contests have helped discover previously unknown writers, the Chi-family masterclasses have not only refined these newly identified talents, but exposed them to opportunities to monetize their writing skills. Since 2017 till date, Chioma has consistently been named among Nigeria most influential writers by the Nigerian Writers Award. The author of Sahara’s Claws and Broken Things, Chioma has devoted her life to grooming world class writers and sensational storytellers.
Arukaino Umukoro is a Nigerian Journalist notable for winning the CNN/MultiChoice Africa Journalist Award in the year 2015. He started his journalistic career with the National Standard news magazine in 2007, and earned the National Standard’s ‘Writer of the Year’ award in 2007. From there he moved to Tell Magazine, and subsequently to The Punch, where he rose to be a senior correspondent. Umukoro won the Nigeria Media Merit Award for the first time in 2013 and again in 2017. In 2015, he was named as the CNN/MultiChoice Africa Journalist in the Sports Category, and the S.O. Idowu Prize for Sports reporting in 2017, and took second place in 2017. In 2017, he was appointed into the Nigerian Government as an Aide on Communication Projects to the Nigerian Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.
Sally Kenneth-Dadzie is a blogger, wife and mother based in Lagos, Nigeria. From early childhood, she bore the weight of an active imagination that often pushed her to reclusion. Years would pass before she would find the pluck to put those imaginations to words. She began with stage dramas for her local church, and moved on to short stories, and then, web series on her blog. Finally, she found the courage to pick one of those series and put them together in her first novel, Fish Bran Clan. She has gone on to write ten more books. Sally has twice been named one of the most influential writers under 40, and has bagged the award for Fiction Writer of The Year in 2017 by the Nigerian Writers Awards. Efe Paul Azino
Efe Paul Azino is one of Nigeria’s best-known performance artists and poets. In 2015, he co-founded West Africa's first international poetry festival, the Lagos International Poetry Festival, which he currently directs. He is also the director of poetry at the annual Lagos Book and Art Festival. In 2017 he was named as one of the most powerful people in the Nigerian art and culture space by Ynaija. He published his first collection of poetry in 2015 titled For Broken Men Who Cross Often, under Farafina Books. He has appeared at the Berlin Poetry Festival, Johannesburg Arts Alive Festival, Spier International Poetry Festival Cape Town, Taipei Poetry Festival and the Ake Book and Arts Festival amongst others. His poems have been translated into Afrikaans, French, German and Mandarin. He is an Osiwa Poetry Residency Fellow, 2019 Moniack Mhor Poet in Residence, and his second poetry collection, The Tragedy of Falling with Laughter Stuck in Your Throat, is due out in 2019.
Editor, Culture Critic, Lawyer
Jerry Chiemeke is an editor, mental health advocate, culture critic and lawyer. His works have appeared in The Inlandia Journal, Bone and Ink Press, The Question Marker, Agbowo, Kissing Dynamite Poetry, Nightingale and Sparrow, The Guardian, Music in Africa, among others. A lover of long walks and alternative rock music, Jerry lives in Lagos, Nigeria. His non-fictional book "The Colours In These Leaves" and his poetry chapbook "The Vanilla Verses" are available in digital format. Jerry is also the winner of the 2017 Ken Saro Wiwa Prize. Author, Writer, Creator
Vangegh Begha is an Author, Writer and Creator. His writing career kicked off in 2012 with his first self-published novel ‘Roles in a Script’. Since then, he has completed ‘As Told by the Nightfire’, a collection of poems; Queen Piece, a yet to be published novel; and ‘As Told by the Nightfire II’.
In January, 2019, ‘the Nigerian Dream, the Ice Prince story’ was published. The book which Vangegh Begha describes as a pseudo-biography is the first installment in his Nigerian Dream Series. It is Co-authored by popular musician Panshak ‘Ice-Prince’ Zamani.
As a creator, Vangegh Begha focuses on the themes of spirituality, African history and culture. Citing works such as ‘Doctor Faustus’ and ‘Naruto’ as some of his greatest influences, he is a student of traditional and non-traditional media such as comic-books, Anime and Manga. He is currently the founder and manager of None House, a content-creation and publishing company based in Lagos Nigeria. He hopes to publish his next two novels ‘Queen Piece’ and ‘The Ogoso Bushbaby’ within the next year.
Awele Ilusanmi is the founder and president of Literary Authors Cooperative Multipurpose Society of Nigeria. She is also president of the Nigerian Chapter of the Association of Publishers for Special Sales (Denver, Colorado, USA). She is the author of Comforting Arms, Launch Money and Book Marketing Strategies for Nigerian Authors.
Tomilola Coco Adeyemo
Tomilola has worked as a professional screenwriter in Nollywood for 6 years. She has worked as a Screenwriter on Africa Magic Hush, a Screenwriter and Researcher on MTV Shuga 6 and a Story Editor on Africa Magic Forbidden.
A storyteller, Tomilola’s ability to tell stories transcends the screen and is also vivid in her prose fiction as a romance Writer. She currently serves as Team Lead at True Nollywood Stories (TNSng)
Olu Balogun was born in Warri, Delta state but his father was from Ekiti state. He is a writer, poet and digital business developer. He studied Philosophy at the University of Lagos, where he also started writing professionally. He invented and produced the world's first Photo Novel series; Fame and Luv, between 2014 and 2016, in three seasons and 39 episodes. His first published novel was released in September 2018; OBSESSION. He has also published his second novel, Aisha and John, in July, 2019.
Joey Akan is a multi award winning writer, broadcaster, host, public relations consultant and commentator. Currently, he is the Editor of Universal Music Group, Nigeria. Joey is a two-time winner of the Nigerian Writers Awards (2015, 2016), and the Scream Awards for Entertainment Journalist of the Year. His works have appeared on Pulse, Guardian, OkayAfrica, Genius, CNN among others. He is the host of the No Ketchup Podcast. Joey has also covered some of the continents biggest events, including the MTV Africa Music Awards, Red Bull Culture Clash, Headies, African Music Awards, and many others. He is a volunteer at the NGO, Mentally Aware Nigeria.
Oghenekome U. Ozoro
Oghenekome U. Ozoro, a University of Lagos Psychology, currently works as an editor with Cactus Global. In 2003, Ozoro simultaneously dropped out of two schools, the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University and Yaba College of Technology, to start a publishing firm, The TaleBearing Enterprises. The venture failed within a couple of years. In 2014, he turned his Wordpress blog, Kume’s Tot Lot, into a playground for aspiring writers to hone their craft with feedback from readers and free editing services. His entrepreneurial streak would lead him to found myAfroHub.com in 2016, an online platform designed to serve the expanding Natural African Hair Movement, with free microblogging, a marketplace and a business directory. Ozoro’s professional capacities span publishing, editing, digital marketing, and business development.
Author & Principal Director of Speaking Pen International Concept
Sunday Abegunde is the highly versatile Principal Director of Speaking Pen International Concept, an authors services firm. This reputed public speaker is the author of the book, 'Unleash Your Potential: Beyond Just Motivation' and he is attested to be a vastly skilled content creator (texts & videos) and digital marketing strategist. He has to his laurel cap a number of national and global awards including the World Union of Poets Prize 2016 and had featured on some international journals and anthologies.

The Writers’ Conference 2019 is a platform fashioned out to create a community where writers can exchange ideas, share information, form partnerships and grow together. This year, we are going to explore this theme through workshops, panels and keynote speeches, putting together a bigger programme of events. Limited for 250 participants only.
